When Placing a 5x8 Rug, it is recommended to leave 18 to 24 inches of exposed floor around the perimeter, as this size is perfect for smaller spaces, with the furniture legs off the rug.
For an 8x10 Rug, the front legs of all furniture should be placed around the edges, filling the visual space of a seating area, while still leaving 18 to 24 inches of exposed floor around the perimeter.
A 9x12 Rug, on the other hand, will fill most rooms, and all furniture should be placed directly on top to keep the space intimate. However, 18 to 24 inches of exposed floor around the perimeter should still be maintained.
